When Lister Robinson joined his neighborhood watch patrol he never imagined he'd be watching for bears.
"He cut out, and there was a bunch of trees going boom, boom, boom, boom," said Robinson describing the animal he saw trekking through the woods behind his West Mobile home.
Over the last couple days, several people have reported seeing a mama bear and her cub on Howell's Ferry Road near the Forest Acres subdivision. A Mobile police sergeant who was searching the area said he saw the bears, but they went into the woods when the officers showed up.
Sheryl Neighbors was driving a school bus when she spotted one of the bears Thursday morning.
"I want to say he was maybe 200 pounds or something," she said.
Officials at the Alabama Department of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries says the bears have not acted aggressively, so he doubts his officers will try to track them down. Instead, he just warns residents not to get between mama and her baby.
"The bear is probably just moving through the area finding opportunities for food," said Sharp.
Wildlife officials say if you live near the bear sightings it's important to make sure your trash or pet food is not where the animals can get to it.

Well, sorry if I offended you all that can’t spell or type correctly. You sure do represent your counties well. Your ignorance and lack of education   really show in your comments. How can you take pride in the thoughts you express to others when you don’t even take pride in the way you present them? What a joke! Respect yourself and others by communicating clearly. I don’t want to read your fourth-grade chicken scratch. ~Peace

Rosepetal, we are nowhere near neighbors…

It sure seems to be a mystery of why they do what they do. It’s probably easier for them to divert people’s attention to some other place instead of facing the dilemma in their own back yard. Politicians and bureaucrats are good at that. Probably can get more money for “save the polar bears” instead of helping the domestic black bears survive.

CARL, you know I find it pretty odd that the US is more worried about the Polar Bears here in Canada, than the Black Bears in our own back yard. They just added Polar Bears to the endangered species list, and there’s far more of them than Black Bears. Maybe Uncle Sam should start worrying about our own wildlife preservation, and less about others. I guess it’s pretty inevitable, eventually there will be none of them left, because we allow clear-cutting of land to make room for huge subdivisions. It’s not the bears that are nuisances, they have been here for hundreds or years. We wondered into their back yards, they didn’t barge into ours.

I don’t like what I’m finding so far! In eastern Texas, louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, they’re listed as endangered, threatened, protected, etc. In most other states they are listed as a GAME animal! Doesn’t bode well for these local bears, does it ?

I wonder what the black bear count is in the county and should they be counted as an endangered Species ? Probably not, but I have to believe their numbers are decreasing rapidly. Maybe they’re on a protected list somewhere, Think I’ll nose around for a while, see what I can find. I’ll pass along anything I find.

Dear bloggers,

Let’s remember this is a forum, not a chat room. Intellectual debates are encouraged but let’s stay on topic. Most people that post comments here are regulars. I know because I see the same people posting on different stories. That’s wonderful because it means you have concern for your community. Please make an effort to type correctly and edit your comments before you submit them. A grammatically correct comment will allow other readers to better understand your message. I’m not a perfect speller but I do make an effort to capitalize appropriate letters and add periods and commas where I feel they are needed. View these forums as opportunities not to only share what you know with others, but most importantly, to learn from others. Well, I guess the point of all this is we need to try to live in harmony with ourselves and nature. No, I’m not some Zen tree-hugger, but I like nature as much as the next person. There are lines to anything though, and animals will generally live by survival of the fittest. But we also have designated hunting times so that there is not population overgrowth. So what to do about the bear? I guess respect her and the cub and leave her alone. She will hopefully find her way to a less populated area, and if not, perhaps the wildlife guys can trap her and move her, so she or others are not hurt.
