After sitting idle for nearly three years, construction will resume on the multi-million dollar Bass Pro Shops and Spanish Fort Town Center project on the Eastern Shore. City officials and developers finalized financing and terms of a new contract Monday night.

"We're very excited about this," says Spanish Fort City Councilman Mike McMillan. "Contract problems, construction delays because of Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina and legal issues delayed the project, but work will resume before April 15th."

Both sides are excited about the new terms of the contract. As part of the deal, developers will give Spanish Fort nearly 2.6 million dollars to build a new high school athletic facility, a new city hall and to help purchase a new fire truck. Spanish Fort has approved a 30 million dollar bond issue to pay for roads and bridges inside the shopping complex. Taxes collected from shoppers at the new facility will help re-pay the city's 30 million dollar bond issue.

The 262 acre shopping complex could open in 2008.
