The proposed shelter will be 8,055 square feet and it will hold more than 800 people. The shelter will be built on Highway 59 near the Jack Edwards Airport.
Senator Sessions says the money is a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA will give the money to the Alabama EMA and then it goes to the City of Gulf Shores.
Senator Sessions says, “The residents of Baldwin County and the City of Gulf Shores know firsthand that severe storms and hurricanes represent real danger and must be taken seriously. The City is still working to recover from the devastating winds and storm surges of recent disasters. This $2.2 million grant will help city officials provide a shelter capable of withstanding hurricane force winds, giving residents a place to take refuge during extreme weather.”
