Carl- Lets say you are driving your brand new, just purchased 2005 BMW. You saved for 4 years to buy the car but you had to buy used because your credit was not so good. The car is in mint condition and not a scatch. Your job is not so hot so you could only afford liability. Your job does not offer medical insurance or short term disability. You live from pay check to pay check and spent most of your savings on the car. One day you get rear ended at an intersection by a 1987 Caprice with $1500 rims and a $1500 boom box. The driver is talking on his cell phone when he drives the trunk of your BMW into the backseat of your car. You go to the hospital with injuries and are out of work for two weeks. HE YO....he aint got a lick of insurance and all you got is liability. Your car is totaled. He just barely smashed in his bumper and drives home like nothing happened. O ye, he got a ticket for no insurance. You never collect Jack because he aint got Jack and your life is ruined.

I think Crystal teeny has got it down pat,hit the nail on the head. They ( the governor and insurance companies) know that a lot of the people without insurance are not going to get insurance regardless,So where do you get the money for damages done by uninsured motorist? From the people already paying their fair share and more ,and all this at a time of record profits for the companies! I would be willing to bet this is just the start of mandatory increases and will probably come at a more rapid rate from now on. The ones just hanging on to pay their insurance will be forced to join the crowd of the uninsured.If it looks like there might be a dip in their profits they’ll just run the police out to pump up their profits for them and the city. I’m probably wrong but I do not like having a insurance police force that is funded by me.

The minium car insurance will not fix cars today...Had a wreck recently and the guy that hit 2 cars had 20,000 in insurance the damage to my vechicle was more than that and so was the other car, so who do you think fixed our cars our own insurance.  Go Bob Riley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or a really crazy idea would be to require everyone to show proof of insurance when they renew their car tags.  No proof no tags.  Instead we spend/ waste police resources setting up road blocks to check for insurance.
