JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - School districts are so desperate to get
teachers into classrooms the state has issued about 2,500 emergency
certificates this school year.
The certificates allow teachers to work in hard-to-fill teaching
positions like special education or mathematics.
Mississippi Teacher Center Director Cecily McNair says looking
at the number of certificates issued is one way to track the number
of teachers Mississippi needs.
But the need is increasing and with 5,500 teachers eligible to
retire districts are scrambling to fill open slots for the
2008-2009 academic year.
The problem gets worse in rural parts of the state and in
harder-to-fill subject areas such as math, science, foreign
languages and special education.
Base pay for Mississippi teachers with no experience is $30,900
per year, but each school district offers varying supplements.
The Biloxi Public School District, which pays new teachers
$37,000 a year, is trying a pay incentive program for those who
teach science, math and special education.
Biloxi personnel director Charles Benton says the incentive has
been an eye-catcher as he attends various recruitment fairs.
