The fire at 1406 Springhill Avenue, near the intersection of Cottage Drive, was reported at 12:15 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they noticed smoke coming from the utility room of a downstairs apartment. The fire damaged an adjacent bedroom before firefighters could put it out.
Investigators say appliances, plugged into several extension cords, caused an electrical overload.
