The city of Mobile expanded its borders last Fall through an annexation vote.
But while the city's budget grew, the Mobile County Public School System's bank account shrank.
Superintendent Dr. Roy Nichols says the school system expects to lose 2.5 million dollars as a result of the annexation of the business district of Schillinger Road.
He says that money could pay the salaries of 50 teachers.
City Chief of Staff Al Stokes told News Five that it's too early to know how the annexation will affect the school system.
"It would be nice if the annexation had in fact revenue neutral as we were led to believe. I understand the way the law was structured by the legislature it didn't end up that way and i'm sorry that it did not end up that way," said Mobile County Public School System Superintendent Dr. Roy Nichols.
If there's a short term pain or short term impact, it's only going to manifest itself in the long term," said City of Mobile Chief of Staff Al Stokes.
The school system was already in a financial bind because of years of bad spending habits.
Dr. Nichols says not having the extra money from the city just makes things worse.
