Sunni Scott heard about the new law and wanted her story told! "I was clawed all the way down my entire body. My hands were so black and swollen; I couldn't drive for two days." Scott says she was attacked by a neighborhood dog roaming the streets! "He went straight for my face. I was able to fight him off but he clawed me and was able to bruise my hands by trying to hit his jaw down on my hands. He's still running loose everyday." Mobile County's Animal Control Ordinance would require pets to be restricted to the owner's property, licensed and vaccinated. There would be a five animal limit. Breeder Bonnie Hale says that's not something she can do! "It's impossible to be involved in showing dogs with less dogs than five. I think they should have a limit of 25." Animal breeders would be able to apply for a special license to have more than 5 animals.
For Animal Humane Officer Elizabeth Flott, this law is a long time coming! "It's something we've needed for a long time. Hopefully, this will make believers out of some people. When you hit 'em in their pocketbook, they become more responsible owners."
For example, it would be $25 dollars if you don't restrain or get your pet licensed. A heavier fine of $50 dollars would be slapped on an animal owner who neglects their pet or doesn't get it vaccinated.
There will be another public hearing about the Animal Control Ordinance on April 3rd at the Semmes Community Center at 6:00 pm.
