WASHINGTON (AP) - A government report shows Alabama is among the
states with the lowest rates for driving under the influence of
illicit drugs within the past year.
The states with the lowest rates are: New Jersey, 3.2 percent;
Alabama, 3.4 percent; and North Dakota and South Dakota, 3.5
percent.
The report says the upper Midwest has the worst drunken driving
rates in the country.
More than a quarter of adult drivers in Wisconsin have admitted
driving drunk. Rounding out the worst five states in the three-year
survey, North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota.
The most sober drivers are found in Utah, the only state with
fewer than 10 per cent of drivers saying they have gotten behind
the wheel after drinking. Several southern states are in the top
five, including West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky and North
Carolina.
Nationwide, 15 percent of the 127,000 adults questioned in the
National Survey on Drug Use and Health say they had driven under
the influence of alcohol.
