Gov. Bob Riley says he will oppose a
proposed constitutional amendment to remove the state sales tax
from groceries if the proposal makes it to the general election
ballot in November.
Riley said Thursday he opposes the measure because it would
raise the state income taxes paid by about 30 percent of
Alabamians. It would do that by eliminating the state income tax
deduction for federal taxes paid.
The proposed constitutional amendment by Democratic Rep. John
Knight of Montgomery won approval by the Alabama House on Tuesday.
But it hasn't been considered by the Senate. If the Senate passes
the proposal, then Alabama voters will have the final say on Nov.
4. It does not go to the governor for his signature or veto.

Thank God somebody thinks about poor people!  I’m voting for no more grocery taxes.  Governor you had better come up with some money because I got allot of friends with me on this one.

Why should “well to do taxpayers"take up the slack ? I think that should be obvious, because they are able to! If you don’t think poor people work hard ,you haven’t watched ditch diggers and a lot of other low paying jobs. If you think the poor are all either mentally or physically handicapped that includes some pretty bright people that have left this world who didn’t have two nickels to rub together. Why go to college? Why get an education? To educate your self about the world and people and to make the world a better place. The word to use is GREED,for people who get an education just to make more money than some less fortunate .Time is one of the most important things in the universe, right after love for fellow man, and whose to say an hour of this person’s life is worth ten times the worth of another person’s hour. Drop the grocery tax and give some people a few more groceries in their baskets.

I have worked hard for all of 48 years, seen many people do less work and receive more, Now that I have retired every penny counts.  There are many, that could not have a college education, but still worked their way up to a good life, but now have to watch every dime, and food has to be bought so no tax would help.  10 items cost me 91.00, that is a big difference since a year ago..

Why go to college? Why get an education? Why do better than others? Why strive for a better life by working hard to make a decent living?

Lets just penalize the achievers and reward the under achievers.

What ever happened to “pay your fair share”? Or, “you made your bed so you have to lay in it”?

Some people work very hard to make good money while watching others not work so hard to earn little money.

This is the USA. You are only as poor as you make yourself. It is your own fault unless you are handicapped physically or mentally. This is the land of opportunity. The problem is that some folks make decisions that put good opportunity out of reach.

Why should “well to do taxpayers” take up the slack?

A DOLLAR EARNED HOLDS THE SAME EARNED VALUE REGARDLESS OF WHO’S POCKET IT’s IN.

OF course the governor is against it! It will negatively impact him, meaning he would lose some of his deductions or of his friends. Mean while ,we,the common people, have all the negative impacting we can stand and more.

It will only require those earning above 125,000.00 a year to lose their deduction.  Duh, who does it help the most?  the middle income… Those that need it the worse.  Big money people will suffer..

Here’s a novel idea.... don’t rob Peter to pay Paul.  Rather make a legitimate tax cut by reducing overall government expenditures.  If say 1% of the entire budget was spent looking for ways to save tax dollars (by an outside firm) I bet we could lower taxes by 10% without blinking.  I don’t think our leaders will ever be that transparent or willing to give up tax dollars because it’s just too fun finding all kinds of ways justify spending it.
