It's hard to imagine there is any Florida town that has only 7000 residents...especially when you see it. Water views abound. and although this city was established before the Civil War, most of that water is still very clean.

The sign at the city limits says, "Canoe Capital of Florida."

And a few miles north of town there are plenty of canoes and kayaks at a wilderness resort call Adventures Unlimited. Its owner claims that within an hour's drive of Milton, there are 500 miles of canoeable waterways.

Milton's heritage is a common one...timber and railroads. You can still see the depots...restored in a park adjacent to the Village of Bagdad, which itself has homes that date back to when lumber was king.

The original downtown of Milton, the Courthouse Square area, is looking very good these days...and behind the restored buildings...Riverwalk Park gives the public access to the Balck River.

But Milton's appeal is not just the geography.

One passerby says, 'It is the people...I love the people."

{WOMAN} "I like it being a small town and knowing most people."

{MAN} "I really love the people here...they have a big heart."

A big heart...the citizens of Waveland, Mississippi, would say the same thing.

Donna Adams, the City Manager explains, "The Waveland Project...Here we are just a little city, but we had a heart for what happened in Katrina....We had a crew over there that helped them with some of their water improvements and things. We raised about, over $20,000 that went to Waveland."

...So it turns out, Milton is a pretty nice neighbor, too.

Incidentally, The name Milton is probably derived from when it was called Milltown. Among its other early names are "Hardscrabble" and "Scratch Ankle."
