A new twist in the controvery over a big pay hike for Alabama lawmakers. Last week, lawmakers voted themselves a 62 % pay raise -- but the windfall does not end there. According to the Alabama Policy Institute, a conservative think tank based in Birmingham, state lawmakers "also" approved automatic yearly pay raises, which means they would get a raise every year without having to vote on it. Lawmakers currently make just over 30-thousand a year. A 62 percent increase would bump them to 49-thousand dollars. Governor Riley says he will veto the raise, but lawmakers can override it.
