inmates, new Sheriff Melvin Brisolara says he will ask county
supervisors for more jailers and security upgrades.
Brisolara, who took office three weeks ago, said 80 percent of
cell-door locks are broken at the Harrison County jail.
Early yesterday (Sunday), inmates in one cell block spent hours
prying a steel door from its hinges and pounding it against a
concrete wall without being detected.
Four of the inmates managed to squeeze through the forced
opening and flee, with perhaps hours passing before they were
missed.
Today (Monday) Brisolara and his deputies will bring a 300-pound
steel door into a meeting of the Harrison County Board of
Supervisors as a testament to deteriorating conditions.
Supervisors will be asked to award bids for sliding cell doors,
a new lock system and other security upgrades that will cost up to
$5 million.
