(AP) A 23-year-old woman who got a friend to kill her Jack Russell terrier was charged with skinning the puppy to make a belt out of its hide.

Krystal Lynn Lewis and Austin Michael Mullins, 26, were being held Friday in the Muskogee County jail on $25,000 bail each. They were charged with one felony count of cruelty to animals.

A Muskogee County judge ordered a mental competency hearing for Lewis.

Lewis wanted the puppy, named Poplin, killed because it was a gift from a female ex-lover with whom she doesn't get along, said Muskogee County sheriff's deputy George Roberson.

Roberson said Mullins shot the terrier 10 times with a .22-caliber pistol. Lewis skinned the animal at her apartment and nailed the hide to a board.

From my point of view justice is not being doled out adequetly I was raised poor on an old cotton farm and was taught to respect all life.If you messed with a chicken or any other animals especially my pop’s two big red mules you got the razor strap on your backside.It wasn’t child abuse it was child training and i thank my grand parents and parents now.It made me stronger and a better person These people are sick.hurting an animal to get back at a lover They will probabaly have plenty of them where they are headed.Alabamaoutlaw

smason- I agree with you on the lack of punishment afforded people who abuse animals in Alabama, however this horrible incident took place in Oklahoma. They probably aren’t much better at punishing animal-abusers than Alabama, unfortunately.

Yes, rms. The prosecution rate for animal cruelty in Alabama is downright ridiculous.

I hope that they throw the book at this lady too, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean much here.

You are right,smason. I believe Ted Bundy, the Zodiac killer to name a couple-all started out torturing animals. Unfortunately,unless you are fighting dogs-the sentencing for animal cruelty charges is laughable.I believe dog fighting is the ONLY animal cruelty charge that actually can carry federal charges.

mob1- you should always worry about animal crimes. It has been proven that a person capable of beating/torturing/murdering animals has the capacity to do the same to children then adults, and often do if not caught in time.

I don’t think Fess Parker’s character killed the animal just to make a hat. They did a lot of trapping in “them” days and used the by-products as needed.

What about mountain men? They used bear skins for coats, but that was a by-product of hunting for food.

This *is* the worst story. To shoot the innocent puppy 10 times is digusting. Why in the whole would she want a belt from a dog that her ex gave her? Wouldn’t the belt be a reminder of him?

If she didn’t want the dog, the dog could have been put up as a rescue animal.

She needs to be skinned ALIVE!
