UNDATED (AP) - His back resting comfortably against her chest,
Hector nestles his massive canine head into Leslie Nuccio's
shoulder, high-fiving pit bull paws against human hands. The
52-pound dog is social, people-focused, happy now, it seems,
wearing a rhinestone collar in his new home in sunny California.
But as Hector sits up, deep scars stand out on his chest, and
his eyes are imploring.
He is one of the dogs rescued from former Atlanta Falcons
quarterback Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels.
Authorities descending last year on Vick's home in Surry County,
Virginia, found where the former NFL star and others staged pit
bull fights in covered sheds, tested the animals' fighting prowess
and destroyed and disposed of dogs that weren't good fighters.
Vick is serving a 23-month federal sentence after admitting that
he bankrolled the dogfighting operation and helped kill six to
eight dogs. Three co-defendants Purnell Peace, Quanis Phillips and
Tony Taylor also pleaded guilty and were sentenced, and the four
now face state animal cruelty charges.
Oscar Allen, who sold a champion pit bull to Vick's dogfighting
operation, was sentenced Friday on a federal dogfighting charge.
Officers who carried out the raid found dogs, some injured and
scarred, chained to buried car axles. Forensic experts discovered
remains of dogs that had been shot with a .22 caliber pistol,
electrocuted, drowned, hanged or slammed to the ground for lacking
a desire to fight.
A bewildered Hector and more than 50 other American Pit Bull
Terriers or pit bull mixes were gathered up and held as evidence
before being spread to rescues and homes throughout the country.

For Mercedes:
Three years ago my husband and I took possesion of a foreclosed home, that had an abandoned pit bull left behind. She was in very poor condition physcially, having scars and gashes all over her body. She was terrified of any loud noises and other dogs. Our vet told us that she was what they call a “bait dog.” These monsters who have these fighting rings use the mild mannered dogs who have no fighting desire to train the aggressive dogs with. The fighting rings will not function without the “bait dogs.” I do not know if these are the dogs of Vick’s that were adopted out, but do know that before any seized dog is adopted out they go through strenous dispostion tests.
The dog left behind in our home has become the best dog we have ever had. She is the most gentle and loving creature. Her best friends are our 7 year old cat, 3 year old son, and five year old daughter. I am blessed that she is part of our household. I would definantely consider adopting a PB again.

Yes, Greyhounds will rip a bunny rabbit to pieces. A pack of dogs are capable of just about anything. On the other hand, a pet Greyhound does not typically turn a sleeping baby into a chew toy like Pitbulls do. I read horrible stories about Pitbulls attacking people nearly once a week. Show me one newspaper story of a person getting bit by a pet Greyhound, I’ve never seen one.

I have a coment on greyhouds now. Okay a greyhound can be sweet and loving, but you don’t see what happens when they are nasty. I am a hands on expert with this, I worked with them for years. I have seen what some of these dogs are trained with and I have seen dog fights at the compound, so don’t go saying they are always sweet and go after only things like cats. Why do you think they like for you to have older chilren? The only difference between pitbulls and greyhounds is one is a little more prodictable. Why do you think they have muzzles on them? Dog fights that’s why. Unlike the pitbull they don’t go for the throat they go for the under belly and rip the other dog open then you have a massive dog fight on your hands. All it takes is a squeak to set these dogs off. I can’t go into detail anymore than I have, but these are facts that do happen and people don’t know about it.

Some dog breads are just nasty. That is a generalization, I know some Pitbulls are really sweet and wouldn’t hurt a fly. The problem is when they do snap, they kill.

Now take a Greyhound. You will Never Ever hear of somebody going to the hospital because of a Greyhound attack (pure bread). Attacking people has been bread out of them. They will nip to defend themselves, but they will Never Ever rip a child’s face off. They are very gental pets, where Pitbull seem to always be jumping on people, scraching them in doing so, slobbering on people… they think they own the place. Greyhounds are more like cats, really cool.

I have a comment to make on pitbulls in general. These dogs that Vick did use for dog fighting should not have been petted out, because you don’t know when they are going to snap. Now back to pitbulls in general. I own pitbulls and have owned them for going on three years now. I also have two small children. If you are aware of the possilblities that these dogs may jump on your children, don’t leave them unsupervised with these dogs. I never leave my children out of my view around these dogs. My dogs love on my children, but they are never to be left along with these dogs or any big dogs for that matter. People you have to remeber dogs were not always tamed they once were wild to you know.

Article say’s Vick destroyed and disposed of dogs that weren’t good fighters. Does that mean the adopted dogs were the strong fighters? How many children will get their faces torn off by these dogs? Seems some people care a lot more about pets than people. If a dog in a residential neighborhood is aggressive, it should be put down. Choose the children’s safety over a pet dog everytime. I love dogs and cats. I don’t like seeing visious dogs in my neighborhood.
