NEW YORK (AP) - New push carts are coming to the Big Apple. But
the vendors won't be hawking hot dogs. New York's City Council has
passed a bill to issue 1,000 new permits for street vendors. But
there's a catch. The vendors have to sell fruits and veggies in
neighborhoods where fresh produce can be as hard to find as a
parking space. Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden (FREE'-duhn) says
the aim of the program is to bring fresh produce back into
neighborhoods where diabetes and obesity rates have skyrocketed.
Permits for the new carts will be phased in over two years.
