Authorities in North Carolina have
charged two suspects with first-degree murder in the death of
University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson.
Demario James Atwater of Durham appeared shackled at the ankles
and waist in an Orange County courtroom today with a public
defender at his side. The 21-year-old whispered "yes" when asked
if he understood the charges.
He's been ordered held without bond.
Authorities say they are seeking a second suspect, 17-year-old
Lawrence Alvin Lovett Junior. He is also charged with first-degree
murder. Inveestigators say he can be seen in a photo using Carson's
ATM card.
Carson was found a week ago, lying on a street about a mile from
the UNC campus in Chapel Hill. She had been shot several times.
Police will not say who they think actually shot and killed
Carson.

Authorities have charged two suspects

Court documents filed Wednesday name the first defendant as
21-year-old Demario James Atwater, of Durham. Police are still
searching for the second suspect, 17-year-old Lawrence Alvin Lovett
Jr. He is also charged with first-degree murder in the death of Eve
Carson.

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) - Authorities have charged a suspect in
the slaying of University of North Carolina student body president
Eve Carson with first-degree murder.
Documents filed Wednesday named the defendant as 21-year-old
Demario James Atwater, of Durham.
Chapel Hill police and District Attorney Jim Woodall gathered
Wednesday afternoon in an Orange County courtroom for Atwater's
first appearance.
The 22-year-old Carson was found last Wednesday lying on a
street about a mile from campus. The biology and political science
major from Athens, Ga., had been shot several times, including once
in the right temple.
Her body was positively identified the next day, leaving to a
massive outpouring of grief at North Carolina. Thousands gathered
that day at two campus memorial services, and a third is planned
for next week at the school's basketball arena.
