CHICAGO (AP) - So, just how "safe" is the information you puton social networking sites like Facebook? Not so safe, even if you
take steps to keep your data as private as you can. The problem
occurs when site users download and install what is known as an
"application" -- a mini-program crafted by third-party
developers. On Facebook, for example, applications can be
downloaded only if a user checks a box letting developers know who
they are and allowing them to have access to their information.
That means developers can have check out everything in a person's
profile, except contact information. Experts in online security
fear all of this leaves too much personal information available.
And they worry that few of those who use social networking sites
know where their information goes and how it's used, giving them a
false sense of security.
