NEW YORK (AP) - Investigators are trying to find out who set off
a small bomb early today outside a military recruiting station in
New York's Times Square.
The explosion caused minor damage and no injuries, but it
prompted a huge police response that disrupted travel through and
beneath Times Square.
The blast shattered a window in front of an Uncle Sam recruiting
poster.
The center is normally staffed by two noncommissioned officers
but was empty at the time.
The facility has been the occasional focus of antiwar protests.
And the commander of Army recruiting operations in Manhattan says
if the blast was directed toward American troops, then, in his
words, "It's something that's taken very seriously and is pretty
unfortunate."
Guests at a nearby hotel say they heard a "big bang" and could
feel the building shake.
