CAPITOL HILL (AP) - The Senate votes Thursday on a surveillance
bill that would protect telecommunications companies from lawsuits
for helping the government conduct warrantless wiretaps after
Nine-Eleven.
A last-ditch attempt to kill the bill died Wednesday when the
Senate voted overwhelmingly to hold the vote. The House passed the
bill last week and President Bush has already said he'll sign it.
Bush has been saying he would not sign a revised anti-terror
bill unless it included immunity for the telecom companies. Critics
say lawsuits are the only way Congress and the public will ever
learn the full extent of the surveillance program.
In exchange for telecom immunity, the inspectors general of the
Pentagon, Justice Department, and intelligence agencies will
investigate the administration's warrantless wiretapping program.

Of course we all know that this law wouldn’t be abused by the government or others don’t we ? And that the Inspectors general will all ways come down on the side of the American citizen’s rights when abuse does occur, don’t we ? ? ? ? ?
