LOS ANGELES (AP) — Miley Cyrus is taking issue with a photo of herself that's going around, and it's not another amateur, truth-or-dare Internet snapshot — it's the handiwork of Annie Leibovitz.

"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

The photos, appearing in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, were taken by Leibovitz, a renowned celebrity photographer whose edgy, silver-toned portraits have included subjects such as Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and a naked, pregnant Demi Moore.

The Cyrus pictures accompany an interview with the 15-year-old pop star and her father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus. They include shots of the teen wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet, looking over her shoulder with her back exposed.

The Disney Channel, which airs Cyrus' TV show "Hannah Montana," was also critical of Vanity Fair.

"Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines," a network statement said.

A phone message left for a Vanity Fair representative was not immediately returned Sunday night. But in a statement to the TV show "Entertainment Tonight," Vanity Fair defended its position.

"Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day," the magazine said. "Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."

In a caption released by Vanity Fair with the photo last week, Cyrus expressed her comfort with how the apparently topless picture turned out.

"I think it's really artsy," she told the magazine at the time. "It wasn't in a skanky way. Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool. That's what she wanted me to do, and you can't say no to Annie."

A handful of borderline racy snapshots of a girl who appeared to be Cyrus have appeared on the Internet in recent months, including images of a girl posing in her underwear and bikini last week.

Cyrus is one of the biggest — and most G-rated — acts in the country and is often considered a role model for young girls. Her "Best of Both Worlds" tour sold out arenas, and her successful 3-D concert film collected $31.3 million in its opening weekend in February

Oh before someone tries to attack my spelling let me go ahead and apologize for misspelling Publicity .I spelled it poblicity .It is very late and i am not a great speller to began with .I was much more interested in Math .I hated English class and I am a boat captain so spelling is not one of my strong points.Guess i should have spell checked before posting .lol.grin

So here is my quistion for everyone why do you think that Mrs.Annie Leibovitz wanted to take these pics ?.......ah hah thats right Poblisity ,Fanity Fair knew this would blow up and bring alot of attention to them. But why does anyone want poblisity means people get interested and buy, that means more money.HMMMMMMM Money ,the greed for money, the root of all that is evil.Is that not what made Judas Iscariot betray Jesus. But yet material things never last and money can not be takin with us when we die.Eternity is such a long time ,but is our decisions while we live that desides our fate in the spiritual life.So Ronald “For HEAVEN’s Sake"Take a deeper look at the issue in front of you it is a serious one that does require the publics attention to stand up and say THIS IS WRONG.

? for MeAmerican ,Why is the media to blame for These pics?I mean her parents are there while the photo shot is taking place and second of all they was for Vanity Fair Magazine. Not like they did not expect the world to see them.I believe Society is to blame because of what our young woman see’s everyday in this world on the television,Movies,Magizines ect. ect. ect. Clothes for young girls have got to wear they want our 10yr olds to look as Seductive as the 21 yr olds why because we are buying it and they are making money.Sex sells and everyone is buying. But if everyone said,NO i am not buying that and my daughter is not going to dress that way then guess what ,they would not make money so they would change the style.Supply and Demand.I dont think that the parents should have allowed it and i dont believe Mrs Annie Leibovitz should have asked,But i guess she is someone more special then you and me.Cause if we took those photo’s we would have been arrested.specially in santa rosa county

Live not by the ways of the world, for the world is full of sin. That means just because everyone else is doing it doesn’t make it OK.I bet the ones who has posted here basically saying whats the big deal does not have a teenage daughter. If you did and cherished them like i do mine ,you would have a stronger opinion against these types of issues.I read Laura’s statement that times have changed and there is nothing we can do about it.I believe that is wrong we have to say this is not exceptable it is a slow process but we can change society’s views on whats right and whats wrong by expressing that we do take it serious, we dont want our young daughters growing up believing that they have to be pin up models in order to be someone important. The celebrety scene is one of many influences on our children growing up, but i still believe the parent has the most influence (Thank God) .I could debate the moral issue all day and some would never understand.

I have a beautiful 16 yr old Daughter and in my own Opinion i would never have allowed it ,I see KxVx here wants to defend that she is never nude .Neither is any of the girls in the Victoria Secret booklets either but we all know why men like to look .If she is posting even more provocutive Pics on Myspace then well thats why i would rather live a simple life then all that rich and famous lifestyle .I have more time to pay attention to what really matters.MY KIDS

Someone please link me to the pictures were she was posing NUDE. I have not seen a single NUDE shot of Miley, as she was never NUDE for the photo shoot, and definately more covered than she is in her own myspace pictures!

I have to better watch what I post before sending it Laura Bobby, most of the times it is hard to put into words what you mean or feel .I was talking about a lack of Morals for the people taking or encouraging the taking of photos of young girls nude or semi-nude. I did not mean to imply you didn’t because of what you posted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I encourage that. It’s usually good to see everyone’s opinion on most things .My opinion is that miley is in a position to influence a lot of young girls which sets a higher set of standards for her, role model and such. The adults involved in her life should take the heat and not miley, she’s a minor. When she becomes an adult she can then make all her decisions and be responsible for them.No animosity intended by me for your opinion,it’s just that mine is different and i would defend your right to have yours. Children are precious and i don’t like to see them being taken advantaged of.

Carl come on. I never said there is nothing wrong with minor posing nude. I merely said I do not see anything wrong with the Anne Leb pics. Anyhow I do not see them as distasteful or pornographic. Again with the new my space pics surfacing. She has clothes on and one is her swimming bikini. WOW! I think AGAIN the only reason she is being scrutinized for them is because she is in the public eye. I think every one should worry about their own kids and what they put on myspace and leave Miley alone. You should see the way kids dress. They do not even sell shorts that are right above the knee anymore. Times have changed and we can not do anything about that. I have a 2 yr old daughter and I fully intend on showing her right and wrong. I do have strong morals. I just do not think this meets anything close to what your making it out to be!

What’s wrong with you people? You have got to be kidding, You don’t see any thing wrong with a minor posing semi-nude or nude for a magazine? What’s wrong with most people is that they have a sense of ethics and morals, which obvisiously some people don’t. She’s a minor, when she get’s to legal age she can do what she wants.I went to wikipedia and read the piece on Lwin, she wouldn’t have been my example, but could be an exception. I don’t think you would have enough gigabytes in your pc to hold all the names of women who have made it without posing nude or semi-nude for a magazine while a minor.

And another thing…

Read this…  another young girl who turned out ok, and posed nude (Shock!!  Horror!!!!) at the age of fifteen…
