ABBEVILLE, Ala. (AP) - An 18-year-old hunter has been charged
with manslaughter in the apparent accidental shooting death of a
15-year-old friend whose hunter orange cap was covered by a hooded
coat.
A distraught Michael Newman initially told investigators
yesterday (Thursday) he fired at a deer when the bullet missed,
then struck and killed Joey Drescher. Later, Newman said he simply
shot at movement in a pine thicket. He thought the movement was a
deer.
The shot from his .270 caliber rifle struck Drescher in the
chest. Newman said he ran out of the woods, found his grandfather,
and the two went to a store to call police.
Drescher was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:30 a.m.,
about four hours after the two friends from the Tumbleton community
walked into the woods.
Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox said Newman was released on
bond. He said a grand jury will review the case.

@guest Everyone has there on beliefs. I belive in God. I also believe that when God is ready for you to come home he will send for you. No one knows why things happen the way they do. I do believe that the devil can play a part in death. If it was not ment for this boy to go home to God then he will be with us today. If he was not shot by his freind then I believe that he would had died a different way. It was just his time to go. I hate that this happened. Just remember that what the devil intends for bad God turns into good. Maybe the lesson here is that you should always be sure that you are shooting at a deer or what ever it is you are hunnting for. My thoughts and prayers are with both families.

guest1984 unfortunately things in life happen for a reason. If God intervened in every situation then no one would ever die.  It is extremely unfortunate and tragic that this happened and my prayers are with the family and the 18 year old boy.

@Mississippi - If he exists, I highly doubt that god cares. If he did, then why not intervene and stop the accident? I know your answer already: “But, god works in mysterious ways.” Yeah.. right. Bet you wouldn’t be reading about this if this kid hadn’t shot his friend. Its funny how god only works in mysterious ways when something goes wrong.. yet he doesnt seem to work mysteriously when things go right.

Very true, Stormy, I stress to my kids and grandkids, if you can’t say that is a what ever you are hunting, DONT SHOOT. The young man is going to have to live with this for the rest of his life, but with God;s help both families will survive

Know your target.  Don’t second guess and just shoot at the movement.  Whereas orange might had helped no one knows because it seems like the hunter in question was just shooting at anything that moved.

Don;t know what the law is in Alabama about hunter orange, but here in MS> it’s 500 inches, would an orange vest have prevented this death? Yes, I think so. My prayers and thoughts are with both families.

You know, one of the first things I was taught while learing to hunt was to be sure of your target. Never EVER shoot at movement only, because you don’t know what’s making the movement and it could be a person and not an animal. Seems he forgot that lesson.
