KEY LARGO, Fla. (AP) - A rare beaked whale that was strandedlast Friday off the Florida Keys has been euthanized.
Tests conducted at the Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo
found that the whale had a nonfunctioning liver and failed kidneys,
said Robert Lingenfelser, president of the conservancy.
Lingenfelser said the mature female whale's digestive system had
also shut down. It was euthanized Monday night.
Lingenfelser said a necropsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
The whale was identified as either a Gervais' beaked whale or a
Sowerby's beaked whale. It was discovered Friday in shallow waters
behind a home in Islamorada.
