(June 8) -- A 90-year-old woman spent three days trapped in her bathtub after becoming too weak to pull herself out, the San Jose Mercury News reported Thursday.
Shirley Madsen, of Walnut Creek, Calif., survived her ordeal by drinking water from a rubber duck with a hole in the bottom.
When Madsen got into the tub on May 27, she forgot to put her phone within reach and could not call for help when she got trapped.
Madsen survived for three days stuck in the bathtub by continually replacing the cooling bath water with fresh water from the tap to stay warm. She also used one of her collection of rubber ducks as a drinking cup to keep hydrated during her confinement.
"I have never been so terrified in my life," Madsen later told the Mercury News.
After three days with no word from their mother, Madsen's two daughters grew concerned. Daughter Diane Weber went to Madsen's home where she found her mother trapped in the bathroom and summoned an ambulance.
Following a three-day hospital stay, Madsen was sent home to recover from minor injuries. She worked out a routine to check in with relatives and is getting a waterproof medical alert device. But Madsen also advocates an easy safety plan: "Get a bunch of rubber duckies and make sure one of them can't swim," she joked.

hey granddaughter if she had a cell phone as she should have she would not need to be home in order for someone to reach her [ would make a nice gift if she doesn’t already own one ] ,3 days is a long time for anyone of any age to be trapped anywhere.I am glad to see that your family has made a plan to keep in touch with each other and I surely mean no disrespect to you or any member of your family, you are all truly blessed because this could have ended very tragically had she not been found when she was.may god continue to bless you and your’s

I would like to introduce myself. I am Shirley’s grandmother. My son goes to breakfast with her everyweekend, and LOVES time with his grandgrandmother. You people have a view that is really sad of 90 year old women. My grandmother is NEVER home. She is ALWAYS off with friends, or volunteering, or having fun. Life is too short to waste, and she lives life to the fullest. My mom went to her house. My aunt, pictured, got there the day after from Southern California. At this moment, my grandmother is getting ready to spend the day with her great grandson. I really don’t appreciate you people judging my mother, or my grandmother. My grandmother, is no where near death. Calling her daily, three times at that, would get us no where. SHE wouldNOT be home!

My Mother will be 83 next month and lives alone,I am the only one of 3 siblings that takes time to check on her at all which is at least twice a day.she has good neighbors and likes her independence, she still drives and take care of her self so the only thing I can do is keep checking on her.but rest assured she would not be trapped in her tub for three days, these people should count there blessings that she is alive to make jokes.but at least she had the rubber duck since her family don’t seem to care enough to call her daily,I would definitely keep the duck.

Well, Thank God for Rubber duckies..cause if she had to depend on her kids she`s good as dead!

Yeah for some reason Rubber Duckies always bring joy to the young and old.

OK Javaturner - calm down.  I was not laughing about the woman - I was laughing about after the fact stuff.  The woman is OK.  I’ll tell you what - you try to tell this story to someone - and see if you don’t start laughing.

Have you ever fallen and someone laughed at you and then you laughed at yourself.  This is the same thing.  Think about it.  Loosen up.

Ok ONE we are not saying that the woman “almost” dying was funny, TWO even the woman was making jokes about in her statements. It is not like the women was distraught and in critical condition.  It is not like we are laughing at the neglect of the women. We were laughing at the reference to the rubber ducks, the woman said and I quote, “Get a bunch of rubber duckies and make sure one of them can’t swim,” SHE JOKED.

To those who think this story is “funny”..There`s NOTHING funny about it. This Lady could have lost her life because of children who don`t care enough to 1.have thier 90 year old mom in thier home supervised and 2.children who don`t care enough to call for 3 days. Sounds like they were just waiting for her to croak to get some cash.

I though I had heard it all. I never thought that all the rubber ducks that my daughter has would be a life saving device, wow a 2 for one.

I am sorry - I could not stop laughing last night as I shared this story with my cousin.  I know the serious of the situation but it is not serious anymore but so funny.  She says we should all keep a rubber ducky handy - too funny.
