Mars, now that the Phoenix Mars Lander has sent back dozens of
photos after landing on the red planet Sunday.
One of the nearly 50 test pictures includes a shot of the lander
sitting amid rocks and soil.
A chief scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory calls the
black and white photos absolutely beautiful. Many of the first
shots were more about giving scientists a view of the lander itself
so they could gauge its condition after landing.
It was the first successful soft landing on Mars since 1976.
Four years ago, NASA's twin rovers used parachutes and cushions to
bounce in.
Lately, probes and satellites have had more adventurous landings
on the red planet. More than half of them have failed.
Phoenix will be looking for evidence of the building blocks of
life.

There is no disputing that list and more , such as integrated circuits and the cassette systems which we probably all have used at one point or another. We have got our money’s worth back on their research, Now if we could just get them as enthused over our energy problems they could probably have a good viable alternative for us in a few years . It wouldn’t be cheap for the research and development but neither has the space program been. It would be really interesting to see how much the average american tax payer has paid to NASA and the related research and development needed for the program.
