FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A former pastor goes on trial in Fresno,California, today on charges he murdered an elderly rancher in an
effort to inherit millions of dollars.
The Reverend Howard Porter says the 85-year-old man was riding
with him in a truck that plunged into an irrigation ditch and says
he made a desperate effort to save the man from drowning. The
minister had also been at the wheel in an earlier crash that had
left the man crippled.
The victim, Frank Craig, was a lifelong bachelor known for his
dream of building a museum to showcase his antique farming
equipment.
Porter has been held without bail since 2006 on charges
including murder, attempted murder and theft or embezzlement from
an elder adult. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in
prison without parole.
Opening statements are scheduled today.
