CHICAGO (AP) - A movement encouraging more vigorous exercise in schools could be tempered by a new study that says injuries to
American children during physical education classes have jumped.

The study's senior author says injuries increased by 150 percent from 1997-2007. But Lara McKenzie of Nationwide Children's Hospital
in Columbus, Ohio, also points out the increase may have more to do with lack of adult supervision than lively gym programs.

There's also been a decline in school nurses and class sizes have increased.

McKenzie says the benefits of physical education classes outweigh the risks, but "being healthy doesn't have to hurt."

The study appears in the September edition of Pediatrics. It suggests schools should renew their efforts to make gym class
safer.

i have an idea why don’t we bubble wrap everything!!!

STOP TRYING TO TURN OUR KIDS INTO A BUNCH OF SISSY’S. MY 18MO OLD SON STANDS IN HIS BED FALLS AND GETS HURT, SHOULD I RUSH OUT TO BUY A SAFER BED MS. MCKENZIE?

MY SON GETS HURT A DAY CARE ALL THE TIME, I GUESS THEY SHOULD GO THROUGH AND CHANGE ALL PRACTICES.
WHINNERS LIKE YOU ARE MAKING OUR KIDS A BUNCH OF SISSY’S!!!

Ok, I am done ranting!

Yeah. I took P.E all the way up until my sophomore year of high school. Never had issues. If you did not feel that whatever activity they were doing you could handle they had no problem with letting you and a group do something alternate. No one ever forced me to do anything. The worse thing that occurred from P.E was the people who were fighting over who stole who’s boyfriend or who slept with who’s girlfriend. P.E is the easiest class there is. 2 of the easiest credits there are. No need to make it any easier and less dangerous.

Shame there are no figures in this, makes it sound as if thousands and thousands of kids are getting hurt and maimed, does not breakit down to # in PE class, on playground, knocked down in hallways, etc.  Kinda sounds like schools are totaly at fault, or very careless or .............
