The head coach of LSU's swim team had quite a dive in his own home Wednesday.Coach Adam Schmitt says an eight-point buck dove through his bedroom window. The Olympic-style dive happened in the Riverbend sudbivision, just off Brightside near River Road, close to the LSU campus.
"I was at work over at the university and I got a phone call from my wife saying that there's a deer in the house," Coach Adam Schmitt said. "So, I came running home to see what was going on."
Schmitt says the buck went through his bedroom window and ran down the hall and into his daughter's bedroom. "The wildlife guy thinks he saw his reflection and thought it was another buck and he was coming up to fight it."
His wife was pretty shaken up by the whole ordeal, the coach said. "Yeah, she's kinda in a 'state' right now. She was walking out and saw it run past her. She wasn't sure what it was. My daughter did get cornered in the bathroom there, but she escaped."
Amazingly, the deer did very little damage to the house, besides leaving behind a bloody set of mini blinds and a broken window. Wildlife workers arrived, tranquilized the deer, and hauled it away.
However, workers ended up putting it to sleep, saying the deer was acting particularly sluggish before it was tranquilized, an indication it might have had an illness. Because of that risk, workers say they chose not to release the animal back into the wild.
It was a sad ending to a wild morning near LSU. "Kind of a dramatic thing to have a deer running through your house, to say the least," Schmitt said.
