OSLO, Norway (AP) - Finland's ex-president has won the NobelPeace Prize for his efforts to build a lasting peace in a variety
of locales from Africa to Asia to the Middle East.
Martti Ahtisaari tells Norwegian television he's very pleased and grateful.
Asked what he considered his greatest achievement, he referenced
peace talks in Namibia in 1989 and 1990. The committee said they
"played a significant part in the establishment of Namibia's
independence."
The 71-year-old has had a broad career in both politics and
peacemaking.
A statement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee says of
Ahtisaari, "for the past 20 years, he has figured prominently in
endeavors to resolve several serious and long-lasting conflicts."
