KENNEDY SPACE CENTER (AP) - NASA is trying to figure out why the
launch pad has suffered its worst damage in 27 years of space
shuttle flight.
Bricks and mortar flew off the pad during Discovery's liftoff
Saturday and the space agency says it won't use the pad again until
it figures out what went wrong.
Meanwhile in space, the hatches have opened between the shuttle
Discovery and the international space station.
The astronaut who will spend the next six months aloft
pronounced his new home "beautiful."
Discovery docked after doing its customary back flip to check
for launch damage. About five pieces of foam insulation broke off
the external fuel tank during liftoff, and one or two may have hit
the shuttle. But it's believed it happened too late during launch
to do any damage.
