NEW YORK (AP) - If there was any doubt, the Labrador retriever is the people's choice among purebred pooches for the 18th straight year. That's the word from the American Kennel Club, which keeps its nose to the ground on such matters.

AKC says more than twice as many labs were registered in the U.S. in 2008 as Yorkshire terriers - the No. 2 dog on the list. The Top 10 canines are German shepherd, golden retriever, beagle, boxer, dachshund, bulldog, poodle and shih tzu.

The kennel club says the bulldog returned to the list as No. 10 last year after an absence of 70 years, and has since jumped two notches.

The kennel club turns 125 this year.

dew that is great about the family. i am so sorry about miss sassy. you still think about her, but you are very smart you knew why she did it. how is canada? we decided it would be to much to bring all our critters to canada. so we are looking in eastport its close enough. nova scotia right there. oh well.

rosepetal, family is wonderful, thanks for asking. I never had a dog tear up my house, but one time I decided I wanted a descented Skunk for a pet. I was about 15 I think. She was a perfect pet, furry like a cat, and loyal like a dog. I’d ride my bike down the road, she was right beside me. Get in my truck, she was on the seat behind my head. Anyway we left the house for the weekend, and had her in the bathroom. She had plenty of food and water, but missed the family. She tore the linoleum floors slap out of the bathroom trying to dig out. OMG, I thought my mother was going to die as it was just installed 3 weeks prior. Needless to say, I had to get rid of Miss Sassy. wink

hey dew, how is the family? it is very true with purchasing any dog you should always check out the blood line and the breeder.  know the breed, with large dogs its very important. some dogs bite out of fear and pain. all dogs growing up are like kids they have to be trained in manners. one german shepherd i bought, i kept in our newly remodled kitchen one night as a puppy. well the next morning that kitchen needed remodeling again big time. even door frames. i kenw i married the right man when he told me no sweat that is what they do.

Most any thoroughbred dog has a tendency to be on the hyper or “crazy” side. It’s not the dog’s fault but the breeders. Most thoroughbreds have been inbred generation after generation. That’s how they keep a full blooded bloodline. While most notable breeders try to prevent this from happening, some who are in it just for the money could care less. You have to be careful when buying thoroughbred animals. Always buy from reputable breeders, and request registration papers. This way you can see the bloodline, and find out rather or not the mother and father are daddy and daughter. I know this sounds disgusting, but it’s much more common than you think, especially among pit bulls.

he didn’t just kick him. he was getting out of the truck & the dog lunged @ him. we don’t go around kicking dogs in the head. the dog tried to bite him first then he kicked him to keep him off of him. in other words my cousin was defending himself!

the dog was being kicked in the head and you wonder why he bites? poor animal. i would be biting people to. this is just so sad some people do not need dogs. or pets period. i have a german shepherd that will bite if a stranger comes in my yard without me. i would like to see someone kick my baby in the head. if he could not handle them i promise you i could. i was bit by a german shepherd years ago but i was smart enough to know it was my actions that led to the bite. i would never have kicked the dog.

no it was someone in my family’s. he also tried to bite someone else but they kicked him in the head before he could. He bit me while I was feeding him then, he went nuts i ran. thank God the psycho didn’t chase me. He is a good attack dog. Because he attacks everyone! lol. they keep him tied up now. & it’s not like he bit my arm off he just snipped @ me.
it is the owner that gives a dog his personality because my husband had a rottweiler-pit bull mix & you could take food out of the dogs mouth & she would just lay their. & she weighed like 200lbs.

My sister had a female yellow lab and that dog was crazy.  Never saw a lab act the way she did.  Sis also had a black male lab at the same time and he was the typical lab.  Something must have traumatized the female at an early age.

was it your dog that bit you?

i would have to agree!! the dog is not disciplined @ all. Oh do I hate that dog! I had beagle-dachshund mix & he was the best dog. well tempered good w/ children. but, he also had alot of time taken w/ him.
