The National Capital Planning Commission is scheduled to reviewfinal site and building plans for the memorial Thursday. Later this
month, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts is expected to review the
memorial as well.
Some groups concerned with overcrowding on the National Mall are
objecting to the addition of a bookstore and restrooms in the
memorial plan, as well as the addition of security bollards.
The arts commission had criticized an earlier design, saying the
depiction of King was too "confrontational." The panel has asked
to see a model of the latest design at its next meeting.
The foundation working to build the memorial has raised about
$100 million for the effort. The group must raise an additional $20
million to complete the project.
