WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush is expected to sign legislation
that would ensure veterans benefits to "sole survivors" in
military families.
The Senate gave the bill final passage Friday.
The bill is called the "Hubbard Act" after a family from
California's Central Valley that lost two of three sons in the Iraq
war.
After the combat deaths of his two brothers, Jason Hubbard left
the Army early under the military's "sole survivor" policy.
But he soon found that the Army was denying him benefits he
would otherwise have been entitled to including access to the GI
Bill. He was asked to repay some of his enlistment bonus.
The Hubbard Act would ensure that Hubbard and others in his
position are entitled to the same benefits as others who honorably
leave the military.

Thank you CriderMckinley. That was what I was wondering about. Let me ask you an off the wall question if you don’t mind. Would you be any kin to Charles Mckinley that used to live in the toulminvill area,if I spelled it right, and had two sisters I think, back in the late 1950’s. I lived next door to the Mckinleys back then on Wellsworth street or something like that. The name just rung a bell and thought I’d ask. If you’d perfer not to say on here that’s quite all right.

an only child can enlist but as of the last draft they were not drafted

Quite right LPj1959, those that have honorably served their country deserve what they are entitled to. I was just wondering how a sole survivor bill works. If there is just one child in a family would it prevent them from enlisting or being drafted if ever started again ?

This one stelp to helping the men and wemon that have surved ower country and deserve all that is coming to them.

I wonder how will this work if there is only one child in the family ? Will the young man or woman be denied enlistment or excused from the draft if ever implemented again ?
