MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Martin Luther King Junior is being
remembered in Memphis as a man who helped lead the city's working
poor "to a better way."
King was killed 40 years ago today on the balcony of the
Lorraine Motel while helping organize a strike by Memphis
sanitation workers.
Today, members of the American Federation of State, County and
Municipal Employees, which represented the workers then and now,
marched from their downtown headquarters to the motel.
Several hundred people carrying umbrellas in a steady rain set
off on the mile-long route.
Presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain
are scheduled to take part in later anniversary day events that are
to include an afternoon "recommitment march" and the laying of
wreaths at the motel.
