WASHINGTON (AP) - Congressional investigators say there's aproblem of unfit truck drivers on the road.
A study expected to be released at a House Transportation
Committee hearing today says it's so easy for truckers to fake a
medical certificate that there's almost no incentive to get a real
one.
Officials from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
will be on hand to explain why they haven't fully implemented
recommendations made nearly seven years ago to keep medically unfit
bus and truck drivers off the road.
Statistics show that seizures, heart attacks and other ailments
have been factors in thousands of serious truck accidents.
No database or central repository exists allowing state
inspectors to verify the legitimacy of a medical certificate.
