Eli the Eagle and Jawz the Jaguar, from Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis, ran out onto the court for a dance off during a first half time-out. But things got ugly when the dance off turned into a shoving match. Eli and Jawz then wrestled each other to the ground. ORU's marketing director tried to break up the mascot melee and ended up on the hardwood as well. The referee ejected both macots for the night.
According to a statement issued by Oral Roberts, "The matter was addressed immediately by the cheerleading coach (Brad Turner). Any disciplinary action is being reviewed by the cheerleading program."
Three students share time wearing Eli's outfit. The one involved in Tuesday's takedown has been suspended for the season, which means he will not be in Denver when Oral Roberts faces Pittsburgh in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The first half fisticuffs have garnered so much unwanted attention because video of the incident found its way onto YouTube.
