BOSTON (AP) - The first moon landing 40 years ago was an inspiring event and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum hopes it can be again.

A new Web site commemorating the moon mission and Kennedy's push to land Americans there first will allow visitors to watch the Apollo 11 mission recreated in real time on the Web, but 40 years later.

The Web site - WeChooseTheMoon.org - goes live at 8:02 a.m. Thursday, 90 minutes before the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

Thomas Putnam, director of the JFK Library says the main goal is to offer people a chance to again experience the excitement of the moon mission. Putnam also says he hopes it inspires people to tackle the tough issues facing the country today, such as global warming or poverty.

It was a fantastic time, 1969. I was a teenager (15) and remember it well. I still have newspapers that I saved from the Gemini and Apollo spaceflights. We all gathered around our old black and white TV and watched as Neil Armstrong descended the ladder and spoke those famous words. Waste of money? So much of our current technology results from the space program. I’d like to send Obama to the moon but that would be a waste of resources.

Fantastic even watching on a 13” black and white TV while stretched on our bellies, chin in hands!

We need to build a base on the moon.  Sure it doesn’t seem useful now but if you ever want to advance space travel and our understanding of the universe we need to go back and stay there.  Not only for science but say we found out that the earth will soon be unlivable for some odd reason, astroid, poll shift, global warming, etc.  A few of us may have to get off this planet to ensure survival of the human species.

Wasn’t that much to it, most people thought it was fake. And like now you can’t eat it or live on it why spend the money on it.The oceans of the world is where the exploration needs to be taking place.Closer and can support life

Nice.  I wish we still sent people to the moon.  Although right now is probably not the best time since we have a president who thinks money grows on trees.  Would be exciting.  I’ve never seen something like that happen.  Last manned mission was over 10 years before I was born.  :O

Great waste of money.
