NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City woman who says she can't find a job is suing the college where she earned a bachelor's degree.

Trina Thompson filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court. The 27-year-old is seeking the $70,000 she
spent on tuition.

Thompson says she's been unable to find gainful employment since she received her information technology degree in April.

She says the Bronx school's Office of Career Advancement hasn't provided her with the leads and career advice it promises.

Monroe College spokesman Gary Axelbank says Thompson's lawsuit is completely without merit.

The college insists it helps its graduates find jobs.

Yeah. I have gotten a few grants, but mostly loans. However, I have not had to pay anything out of pocket except for maybe a couple hundred for books. My parents are not footing the bill for my schooling, but not because they do not want to. They did that with my step-sister and she really did not take the schooling seriously. Kept dropping classes and taking a couple of semesters off. I felt that if I took on the responsibilities of my schooling that I would take it more seriously. Plus I was not living at home so I felt that I needed to handle it like an adult since I was adult enough to have a child and live on my own. If I ever truly need something they are there without a hint. I want to keep it that way and not over use their kindness. Besides, I got knocked down the totem pole after Maddie was born. LOL.

The fact that it has only been about three months since she graduated is not going to help her case any. This to me just seems like a case of someone who feels they are “too good” for certain jobs. Since the report says that she has not been able to find a job with “gainful employment” hints that she did indeed find jobs, just not the job she initially thought she wanted. Some people think you get a degree in technology and you are going to become the next Bill Gates. If you do not want the jobs I am sure there are plenty of people that will happily take them. Little money is better than no money. JMO. I know that when I do finally get my degree in Psychology I am not going to go straight to making the money that a Psychologist makes. Common sense. Yes it is always smart to have goals, but there are stepping stones to those goals. Heck, even my husband knew that going into MPD. Had to start out as a cadet, went into the academy as a recruit, had to ride with a FTO, and he still is not making the money that some think that officers make. He will have to work his way up. Gain rank. He will never make the “Big Bucks”, but he enjoys what he does which IMO is more than the “Big Bucks”. He knows that I will eventually get my degree and bring in a decent income, but not right away. If I do not have a degree by the time Maddie starts Pre-K I plan on taking what I can get. Anything to help ease some of the financial stress off of my husband.

I’m not sure where she came up with that figure-looking at their website, a full-time load for undergrad is around $5000/semester, and grad work around $6000/semester. PLUS-they claim to have ample scholarships, grants and financial aid available. Did she pay this all out of her own (or parents) pocket? And if she did pay it out of her pocket, this school is at least nice enough to let you make monthly payments, instead of paying lump sum at registration, like I have had to do with one of my kids. That being said, she must have had some “gainful” employment to afford tuition, right?

I think McDonald’s is hiring. Sorry dear, but there are MANY people in today’s world that have college degrees that amount to nothing more than a piece of paper. Seen all the lay-offs lately?

That is why they call a graduation ceremony a “commencement”; Because when you leave school and start working in the “real world”, you then commence to learn how to succeed in life.  School is great, but there is no substitute for perseverance and experience.

Yeah I think it is no news that you have to suck up to get what you want a lot of times. Grit your teeth and bare it. The people above you did not get there right after graduation. A lot of times people graduate and spend the rest of their lives paying off the tuition. I am wondering if I should sue. You know the commercials that claim that a high school graduate makes so much more in a lifetime than a none graduate. Since I had to quit work and stay at home with the baby I do not make what a drop out working at Mcdonald’s would make. J/K. Throughout high school guidance counselors help to guide you to the right college and what might be the best major for you. However, they can not make the grades and fill out the apps. for you. They can inform you of essays to do in order to get a scholarship, but you have to take the reigns and do it yourself.

A lot of truth in what you say.  My education opened a few doors, but I had to walk through them.  I also learned quickly to forget everything I was taught, because I had to do it the boss’s way or no way.  lol

I guess some people expect jobs to just fall into their laps. The college is there to get you the education you need in order to succeed in life. They give you the tools, but you have to be the one to use them. This woman is 27 years old. Why does she need the counselors to hold her hand in job interviews and basically get the job for her. It is no shock that she is having problems finding a job, everyone is. It could also be possible that they did help her to find a job, but it is not what she thought she wanted. You do not just graduate and get this high paying job. You still have to work your way up. I guess some people expect to graduate and get rich.

Ya know, my life has not turned out exactly the way I figured about 40 years ago.  Can I sue everyone I have come in contact with over those years?

Unless there was some written guarantee without two dozen disclaimers, I don’t think the woman has a case.  She will probably rack up some court costs to add to that $70,000 debt.
