‘Jena Six’ Teen Shoots Self

MONROE, La. (AP) - Police in Monroe, Louisiana, say Mychal Bell's wound isn't life-threatening.
The shooting came days after Bell was arrested on a shoplifting
charge. A police spokeswoman believes Bell was upset over media
coverage of the Christmas Eve arrest and "didn't want to be in the
news again."
Bell was one of a group of black teenagers who once faced
attempted murder charged in the 2006 beating of a white classmate
at Jena High School.
The case led to more than 20,000 people converging on the small
town for the largest civil rights march in decades.
The charges for all the defendants were reduced. Bell pleaded
guilty to a juvenile charge of second-degree battery.

A part of me (largely) agrees with every comment here so far. I think that it is cruel and unusual punishment for him to try to take his own life and have to live with not succeeding. I think things should be like the old days when corporal punishment was in. Get caught steeling, lose a finger. Do it again, lose a hand. I guess he didn’t learn anything from all the media the first…?

On msnbc.com it says he couldnt bear with all the media attention. So its okay to beat someone and be in the news for that!!! But you become a weenie and can’t handle it for shoplifting??? WHATS WRONG WITH PEOPLE??????/

memories of lionel tate. maybe they were right a few years ago and should have kept him locked up. the family got a ton of money, moved 300 miles away and he still gets into trouble. shoplifting? come on he’s rich now he shoudlnt have to steal.
