(AP) -- High gas prices have driven a Warren County farmer and his sons to hitch a tractor rake to a pair of mules to gather hay from their fields. T.R. Raymond bought Dolly and Molly at the Dixon mule sale last year. Son Danny Raymond trained them and also modified the tractor rake so the mules could pull it.

T.R. Raymond says the mules are slower than a petroleum-powered tractor, but there are benefits.

"This fuel's so high, you can't afford it," he said. "We can feed these mules cheaper than we can buy fuel. That's the truth."

And Danny Raymond says he just likes using the mules around the farm.

"We've been using them quite a bit," he said.

Brother Robert Raymond added, "It's the way of the future."

I live in Hillsdale to go to school. My horses are at my mom’s in Lucedale. But thanks for remembering where I live! (this is creepy!)

Didn’t know they allowed horses in Hillsdale.

I have three horses, and they’re pretty expensive. It costs about $50 a month to feed them (just grain, not hay or pasture), $75 to trim their hooves every 5 weeks (it would be TWICE that if they wore shoes). A farm call for the vet is about $30--then you pay for tube worming, routine shots, and having their teeth filed every year. That runs a couple of hundred for all three. Then you must give them a paste wormer every month, about $5 each horse. Then don’t forget if they get sick, especially in the middle of the night or on a Sunday--that can end up being a couple of hundred for ONE horse. Then you have to make sure you maintain your property so they don’t break a leg in a hole, and that your fences are in good repair all the time, because if they get out they could run infront of a car, then the horse owner is not only minus a beloved friend, they are responsible for any damages the loose horse causes…

If you take the housing, feed, shoes and vet bills and compare them against a tractor and fuel, I wonder what the results would be.I wonder how much a good mule cost now? It’s been so long I don’t even remember if GEE was to the left or HAW was to the right or what. But there is one thing you’ll never forget about a mule, never walk behind him within striking distance,if he ever tags you or someone with you with one of those hoofs you’ll remember it forever.

I just hope he takes good care of them. Monthly worming, routine vet visits and shoeing tend to be WAY more pricey than a tune-up on your John Deere.

He even saves on fertilizer.
