motorized golf carts can be a hazard.
A study by the University of Alabama at Birmingham says about
1,000 Americans are hurt on golf carts every month. Those most
likely to get hurt are males between the ages of 10 and 19 and
people over 80.
The little vehicles are increasingly being seen on suburban
streets, where people are apparently using them as a thrifty
alternative to gas-guzzling SUVs and cars.
Research out of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio says
annual injury rates for golf carts more than doubled over the 16
years that ended in 2006. Fewer than half the injuries actually
occurred on a golf course.
The biggest number of injuries came from falling or jumping out.
