ATLANTA (AP) - Gun owners with permits to carry concealed
weapons in Georgia will soon be able to pack heat at restaurants
that serve alcohol, on buses and in parks.
Governor Sonny Perdue signed the bill today in a move experts
say will ignite a resurgence of pro-gun legislation which had been
dormant since the Virginia Tech massacre.
The Republican, who has enjoyed strong support from the National
Rifle Association, had been under pressure from a diverse coalition
of groups to veto the measure.
A gun safety lobbyist says the state doesn't require training
for the concealed weapons permit, only a background check for
felonies.
Patrons packing a gun cannot drink alcohol at restaurants, but
critics say authorities will have a hard time enforcing that.
The bill's sponsor says the measure is "the biggest gun reform
bill in Georgia history."
