Fishburne In, Petersen Out… Eventually

LOS ANGELES (AP) - At least he's honest. Laurence Fishburne says
he's embarrassed he had never watched "CSI" until he was
approached by the show's producers about a role in the series. It's
a role he's accepted, sort of taking over for William Petersen.
Now, Fishburne says he's a "CSI" fan since he's been watching
some old episodes, ones that are "kind of dark and moody, like the
work" he's been involved with before. "CSI" is Fishburne's first
ongoing series role since he played Cowboy Curtis on "Pee-wee's
Playhouse" in the late 1980s. Fishburne will play a college
lecturer and former pathologist who's focused on why people commit
acts of violence. The character is nameless for now but has been
dubbed "The Professor." He'll first appear in the ninth episode
of this upcoming tenth season. It's not known exactly when Petersen
will make his exit but it'll be early next year.

That would be kind of anti-climactic! I could see Grissom leaving the group to chase after some forensic insect living in some far away place. Or, I could see one of the CSI women shooting him with a frozen bullet. But, just to come and go at will…. nah.

Maybe he’ll get killed in a shoot out with the high sheriff which shot his team mate last season. He can go out in a blaze of glory killing the sheriff and getting mortally wounded, which will probably last a couple of shows before he dies off.

Executive producer Carol Mendelsohn tells Entertainment Weekly he (Grissom) may just be back. “He will remain throughout the run of the series an executive producer,” she says. “He will, whenever CBS asks, come back. I don’t think you’ve seen the last of Gil Grissom.”

Will they kill off Grissom, or will he go off on some strange sabbatical to study the mating habits of drunken flies living in a Brazilian jungle?

I always thought the show revolved around Grissom and now I fear it’s demise after the writers strike and all the reruns. I would be surprised if Laurence Fishburne can ressurect it after William Petersen leaves but there is always hope.

Well, that’s kind of a weird choice. I always liked Grissom, but lost interest in the show over the past couple of years. Maybe Fishburne will take it in a new direction.
