NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Federal Emergency Management Agency
official says Hurricane Gustav evacuees whose homes remain
uninhabitable can have their hotel costs paid by FEMA.
Deputy Assistant Administrator David Garratt said Thursday night
that the aid won't be available for short-term evacuees who fled
the storm, spent a few nights in a hotel, then returned home.
Rather FEMA's program pays for "extended stays" in hotels for
people who can't return to their homes because of power outages,
damage or for other reasons related to the storm.
Officials clarified the agency's policies after criticism from
some evacuees who said they would have preferred to stay in hotels
paid for by FEMA rather than in public shelters.

10 o’clock news out of Jackson,MS tonight reported that there were around 100 people in the shelters in the Jackson Metro Area that either did not have a ride home to New Orleans or did not have money for gas.  I am so tired of hearing this BS.  They knew how much money they had when they left and they should have divided it up, half for the trip out of there and half for the trip back.  This was not a vacation or a means of getting money so that one could have a vacation.  PEOPLE PLEASE ACT RESPONSIBLY.  I for one have no sympathy for those who did not have enough money, now as for those who do not have a ride back home, I would like to hear how they got here in the first place.  I tell you one thing, they stick around Jackson very long and they will end up just another statistic.  Every news cast there is no less than 4 or 5 shooting PER DAY and of course nobody saw anything.  The last place I would want to be STUCK is in JACKSON, MS.

This is just another example of too much government. Make people stand on their own 2 feet and quit giving, giving, giving!!!!!! Hopefully Mccain/Plain will change some of this-because this is a waste of funds if I ever saw one.

Can I get an extended stay in Hawaii-I’ll even settle for a Quality Inn, though I would prefer the Hilton, Mr. FEMA man. And don’t forget, I want new clothes and free groceries!

Send the ungratefuls to CUBA !!!  I bet then they would be GLAD to live in the old USA and grateful for any assistance that they get

I was reading your comments and agree on the leech problem. My wife and I went though Ivan and our trailer was damaged. All of the front of the home had been ripped of from wind and rain came in and messed up the drywall and carpet. The home had moved off the blocks. When we tried to get help we wre told we do not qualify because we did not have enough damage. My wife also had to have her knee fix for broken cartledge. We fixed it ourselfs even though wife was on crutches. So I do not feal bad for all the people in any storm when they dont help themselfs and exspect fema to help them. For those that help themself my hat is off to you for trying and may god be with you.

QUOTE: “Instead of pouring good money after bad, give the ungrateful leeches a one time relocation payment to get out and stay out of NOLA and be done with it”.
I hate to say it NUFF, but those same leeches would find another state to mooch off of. Of course just like after Katrina they will always and forever been known at “NOLA victims” and be supported the rest of their life. I would have had more sympathy toward them if they had not started fighting in the Superdome and trashing the place and then gripe about everything the “government wasn’t doing for them”. If FEMA is going to continue to play this game then I think we need money for the “pain and suffering” we went through from each storm in our life time. Of course the first one I remember was Fredrick as Camille happened a year before I was born. Oh, and I want that retroactive too.

Me and the wife and a little girl we were raising(18 months old at the time) would have appreciated a dry spot to sleep in after Katrina. We flooded for the first time and for two days we had to sleep in the water and as soon as the water started receding we started clean up and never did leave. We couldn’t even get a clean up kit from the RED CROSS or anyone else. It took us about a year to get near back to where we were but we did it all by our selves. Man that was work, but we turned down a FEMA trailer or any stay at a shelter. We did look at one shelter but it looked as if every homeless person in the county was there and there was no way I was taking a chance with the little girl so we waded in waist deep water at night back to the house and crawled in a window and made a place high enough to sleep on and did for two days. That’s the reason I think a lot of people are milking the system and don’t want to work for anything. We did it and we are what you call the elderly.

contd:  The difference is I would actually be grateful for a paid vacation at the Battle House; heck, I’d even settle for a Holiday Inn.

Carl, you do have a point; unfortunately, I’m one of those low life working people who foots the bill.  And, if I read you right, so are you!

You people take it easy on FEMA ! I might want to take a two or three month vacation at the BATTLE HOUSE or the HILTON at the couresty of the tax payers, as long as they don’t try to stick me in one of those dog gone shelters. those things are for the working people, I want to be spoiled like all those other Hotel and Motel dwellers from Katrina. grin
