A survey shows two-thirds of teens surveyed saying that despite
their best efforts, smiley-face graphics and popular abbreviations
are getting into their school formal writing assignments.
The Pew Internet and American Life Project found that teens who
keep blogs or use social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace
are more likely to take the shortcuts. "L-O-L," for instance, is
short for "laugh out loud."
The telephone-based survey included 700 U.S. residents ages 12
to 17 and their parents. It was conducted September 19th to
November 16th, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus
5 percentage points. It was co-sponsored by the nonprofit group
that administers the SAT and other placement tests.
