LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities are downgrading today'searthquake in Southern California to an estimated 5.4 magnitude.
Tall buildings swayed for several seconds and some workers were
evacuated from buildings as a precaution. About a dozen aftershocks
hit within minutes.
The Governor's Office of Emergency Services has received no
damage or injury reports. There were also no immediate reports in
Los Angeles, San Bernadino or San Diego counties.
Preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey has the quake
centered 29 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, near Chino
Hills in San Bernardino County. Authorities say the quake was about
8 miles below the earth's surface.
The jolt was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, and slightly in
Las Vegas.
An L.A. county sheriff's spokesman says the quake was
"dramatic."
