BEIJING (AP) - China has been rocked by a major earthquake.
Experts in the U.S put the magnitude at 7.5, meaning it's capable
of causing widespread damage and injuries.
The U.S Geological Survey says the quake struck 57 miles
northwest of the Sichhuan provincial capital of Chengdu and was
centered about six miles below the surface.
It shook buildings in Beijing -- more than 900 miles away -- and
in the business hub of Shanghai. Thousands of people fled office
buildings.
In the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, 100 miles off the
southeastern Chinese coast, buildings swayed when the quake hit. It
was felt as far away as the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.
