aide will be arraigned on perjury and other felony charges today
amid allegations of lying under oath about an alleged affair.
Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty,
strongly denied having a romantic relationship during testimony in
a lawsuit last August. However, text messages retrieved from
Beatty's city-issued pager have revealed flirty and sometimes
sexually explicit communication on where to meet and how to cover
up the trysts.
Kilpatrick says he won't resign, despite calls from the City
Council to step down. The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News
have also demanded his resignation.
A felony conviction would force Kilpatrick out of office under
the city charter.

Detroit Mayor Scandal

Kwamee Kilpatrick is a perfect example of why such personal improprieties should not come into the public arena. A jury awards millions in a Detroit whistle-blower lawsuit, Kilpatrick promises to appeal the decision, attorneys for the plaintiff threaten to expose Kilpatrickās dirty little secrets and wham! Kilpatrick signs off on the 8.4 million dollar settlement!
How can a city receive fair representation when their public officials are so vulnerable to such persuasion?
