DENVER (AP) - Five of the six runways at Denver's airport are
open now as authorities continue to investigate yesterday's plane
accident.
Thirty-eight people were hurt when a Continental Airlines jet
went off a runway and wound up on fire in a ravine.
A Continental Airlines spokeswoman says fewer than seven of the
injured remained in the hospital this morning. The conditions of
two people who had been listed as critical were upgraded today, one
to serious and one to fair.
Federal investigators are trying to determine what went wrong.
The weather was cold but not snowy when the plane began taking
off for Houston last evening. Denver's aviation manager says the
plane veered off course about 2,000 feet from the end of the runway
and did not appear to have gotten airborne.
All 110 passengers and five crew members made it out on
emergency slides, and firefighters extinguished the flames quickly.
The entire right side of the Boeing 737 was burned. The fuselage
partially buckled and one engine and part of the landing gear
ripped off.
