ATLANTA (AP) - If you're going to have a heart attack, Emory University in Atlanta may be the place to do it.Along with the traditional freshman orientation session, there's CPR training. In the next few years, the school hopes to have every one of its 12,000 students trained in basic lifesaving techniques.
Health officials say it'll mean that anyone who has a heart attack while on campus has a greater chance of surviving. Starting CPR just after a heart attack can greatly increase the odds of survival.
In a college gym, hundreds of students lined the floor, hunched over and pumping the chests of inflatable dummies as they practiced breathing techniques.
The class was organized by the university's student-run, volunteer emergency management services squad with the help of the American Heart Association.
Many colleges across the country offer some CPR classes for students. But according to the National Collegiate EMS Foundation, none has ever had such a large training session.
